Not as planned, but good fun anyway!
Maybe it is the time of year, the weather or the
so-called recession but the turn out was one of the
lowest we have had in a long time! Despite that, we
went ahead with the day's activities and those that
took part enjoyed themselves.
After the traditional
Japanese karate ritual of laying out the mats,
Sempai Jason Thompson warmed everyone up with a
few basic competition combinations and then into
the events themselves.
As usual kata was first on the agenda and everyone taking part showed a good standard, which made the judging just that bit harder. However, Shihan Whale, Sensei Gilbert and Sensei Long coped and the results are as follows.
Beginner/White Belt Kata
GOLD: Finn Tennenbaum-Peters
SILVER: Kathryn Goddard
BRONZE: Christopher Adams, Joel Hutchinson, Matthew Shaw
Under 16 Kata
GOLD: Thomas Agnew
SILVER: Sarah Collett
BRONZE: Kai Tennenbaum-Peters
Following the kata we had the Kid Kick competition. Aimed at those who are a bit too young or inexperienced for full-on fighting, the Kid Kick competition lets the competitor loose for one minute on a standing punch bag with a free range of techniques. They are scored on quality and variety of technique, distance and use of combination techniques. Great enthusiasm was allied with some surprisingly good technique from such low grades. The results were so close that there was a tie for 1st and 2nd place requiring a 30 second "encho-sen".
Kid Kick
GOLD: Matthew Shaw
SILVER: Christopher Adams
BRONZE: Thomas Agnew, Regan Harris
The kumite was spilt into two sections, Under 16 and Senior Grades. Well done to the Under 16 winners who did well in there first competition fights.
Under 16 Kumite
GOLD: Shaun McBride
SILVER: Hamish Rule
Senior Grade Kumite
GOLD: Adam Collick
SILVER: Jason Thompson
BRONZE: Josh Hughes
After the traditional
closing ceremonies (putting the mats away) we
retired to the Helston Football Club for a pasty
lunch and then some assorted kick arounds
followed by the wellie throwing.
Despite the onset of rain, Sensei Gilbert displayed a sensational "flying saucer" throwing style which gained the longest throw of the day.
Unfortunately the bar then opened and the rest of the results for the wellie throwing were lost in some intense socialising! I'm sure someone has kept a record somewhere and will get back to me ...
