Sensei Blamey discovers a new way to collect
bruises.
Sensei Alex Blamey went on a course at St. Just (near
Lands End) on 30th November 2008 with Hanshi Terry
Wingrove (8th Dan Karate, 9th Dan Jiu Jitsu, 3rd Dan
Judo, and 3rd Dan Akido). The course was hosted by
Kevin Cooke of Samurai Karate.
"I had not heard of Hanshi Wingrove before and followed a link on YouTube to discover that Hanshi Wingrove was something of a Martial Arts Legend. Hanshi is now 67 years old and I was wondering what sort of course it would be!
When I arrived Hanshi was there with three assistant instructors. They had recently returned to the U.K. after teaching in Japan for two or three weeks.
There were about 40 to 50 other martial artists there from all arts - Iaido, Aikido, Jiu Jitsu, Karate, M.M.A. - and a complete spectrum of grades.
We were split into two groups, those that had trained with Hanshi before and those that had not.
I had not trained with Hanshi before so I was in the "novices" group. The first thing he did was to pull out a slightly built female and a large framed, male black belt and asked the girl to hold this guy to the floor - no chance! Four hours later, at the end of the course, the girl not only held him down but had him screaming in pain.
How did she do this? The quick answer is by attacking the nervous system.
Hanshi was teaching his Karate Jitsu and, considering Hanshi is 67, it was fascinating to see him control two large men at once and have them in so much pain they were incapable of attacking him.
He could control the amount of pain he inflicted, and he could, in certain areas, increase the intensity to fatal levels (and witnessing what he did during the seminar I truly believe he could).
We only practised three techniques as a lot of the time Hanshi was explaining how the martial arts had developed. I found this very interesting and enjoyed it as much as giving and receiving pain. Having lived in Japan for over twenty years, Hanshi Wingrove's martial arts knowledge is vast.
Over the whole four hours no kick was above knee level, and, as Hanshi said, what he taught required no great strength. You do not have to be supple and the techniques will work in the middle of Tesco ... even if you are 67 years old!
A testament to this man is that he takes no fee for sharing his knowledge. All monies raised on the day went to a children's cancer charity.
Hanshi will be back again next year.
I will be there. Hopefully, I will see you there too.
Check Hanshi Wingrove out on YouTube or google him."
