Three disparate karate groups train together
for the first time
Sunday morning in Alverton, Penzance and the YMCA was
the host to a group of high grades (black belts and
those on the verge of becoming black belts) from
three different karate groups - Samurai
Shukokai, Sandokai, and
Shorin Ryu.
The session kicked off with a warm up courtesy of Anthony Woods from Sandokai. A walking encyclopaedia of exercises, Anthony's stretches will be remembered for days to come! Rob Jones of Shorin Ryu then got the class to run through some basic kicking techniques, swapping partners every time so the attendees could get to meet new people.
The last hour was a master class by Sensei Kevin Cooke of Samurai Shukokai who taught one of the most advanced and ancient of karate patterns, Nipaipo. A long a complicated form, most people went home with the basics of the pattern and an appreciation of just how long it would take to perform it well.
The class ended at noon and the Pirates hostelry nearby provided a welcome source of refreshment and a chance to chat in a less formal situation.
All agreed it had been an enjoyable session and worth repeating on a regular basis.
