PROFESSOR CLARK SEMINAR

Fun and pain - quite a heady mix.
As part of his current tour of the U.K., Professor
Rick Clark visited Polkyth Leisure Centre in St.
Austell, courtesy of the local instructor David
Cooke.
The three hour seminar kicked off with a question from Sensei ... "are we going to have fun tonight?"
Once the mood was set the three hours flew by and the 40 or so attendees went home with a quite a few tender parts and a whole barrel full of acquired wisdom.
Students were primarily karate-ka, though Judo and Aikido were well represented as well.
There were a few familiar faces from Newton Abbot and Samurai Karate (Penzance) who seem to attend every available seminar, and quite a few new faces too.
Swapping partners on every technique helped promote familiarity between clubs, styles and grades and gave the attendees a whole range of people to hurt!
Sandokai was represented by Robin Whale, Alex Blamey, Anthony Woods, Euan Bassey and Lorraine Branch.
Shihan Whale said "after 40 years of martial arts training it is very refreshing to learn a few new twists on what you have been doing for decades, be shown some effective new targets to hit and to discover that your kata bunkai can include many nerve strikes and locks. Despite the occasional (extremely) painful moments I had a great time.
"I can't remember the last time I had so much fun at a Karate course, and still learned so much at the same time. Professor Clark is an inspiring and effective teacher. I will definitely be training with him again."
All five Sandokai members at the seminar will have a few new options to add to their Ippon Kumite and pair work practice in the future.
