The Black Belts of Sandokai Karate
At present Sandokai Karate has a number of experienced black belts.
The seniors have one of three titles, either Shihan ("master" or "teacher of teachers" - awarded to 6th Dan and above), Sensei ("teacher" - awarded to grades of 3rd Dan and above) or
Sempai ("senior" - 1st and 2nd Dan grades). We also consider students who hold blue (3rd Kyu) or brown (2nd and 1st Kyu) belts also to be senior grades and often refer to them as sempai, but this is not a formal title
and does not have a capital "S".
Though Sandokai has produced many fine black belts we have "lost" a number of them due to a variety of reasons - moving away, raising a family, work commitments and so on.
